The Bone Season- A Book Review

Disclaimer Starter: Hello Reader! I’m sorry I haven’t updated in a week. It’s because of project works crashing down on my poor little head. I’m pushing my update timings to around a week or so. Do stay updated!! I’m currently reading The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith(J.K Rowling) which is giving me thrills of nostalgia and excitement because Rowling! But I’m keeping my expectations low. ‘S all! Have fun reading!

It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others’ minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

Awh, come on! Dreamwalker? Clairvoyant? I was sold right there. Samantha Shannon made a HUGE breakthrough with this. Newspapers in my country had her picture covering more than half the page of the book section, with titles screaming, “The Next Rowling” and whatnot. Shannon creates a fantasy world right out of almost nowhere. (The London thing was just a foundation and all) There are clairvoyants-unnaturals- people with a connection with the æther, a spiritual realm, whether it’s through cards(soothsayers) or dreams and practically everything.
Paige is part of a gang, and the bond towards the end of the book was so strong, they were like family which was heart-warming and just warm. The story is dark, the themes are around spirits, death, slavery, slavery being the most prominent to me, because in Sheol I, the conditions there are so sick and disturbing, feeding offs and beatings, it was terrible. The development of the scene was superb in the sense that we can get a vivid and great idea of the place(London) even though we’ve never been there. The more disconcerting part of the WHOLE story to me were the characters. I couldn’t   wouldn’t imagine what the characters looked like. My brain just clicked off because she did a damn well job with the scene but not for the characters. “Paige is pale.” okay. Got it. “Paige has dark lips.” Um, okay. “I was the Pale Dreamwalker.” Okayy. How do you look like again? It happens like this! Which I got frustrated about because, what is a story if you can’t imagine the characters? So I threw in the Divergent movie characters(sorry) to save the book.
The plot. Oh, the plot. The plot was the most electrifying and addictive part of this whole entire book. Paige commits treason just by breathing, yes. Which makes this whole book one hell of a ride. Paige is also the daughter of a respected worker of Scion, so double shit. The running, the jumping, the travelling through the æther, it was so addictive and real. And not to mention all the juicy information about everyone! It was just under the skin, you wouldn’t know that about them and then BOOM! Magical and interesting information which either makes you smile or cringe at the heart squeeze.
Alas, the romance. The romance was not what I wanted or shipped so I got all “NUE!!!NUE!! NAHT HIM” at Paige at different times. Shannon throws in a gay couple(not couple yet but you know. BUT NO SPOILERS!) and they are the cutest. I ship them so much. But it will be a little conflicting when you are deciding who to ship because they have such thick sexual tension and it is suffocating.
Anyway! This book was not a disappointment, I did not expect too much from it in the first place, but this book proved to entertain and thrill readers. No, Shannon cannot be compared to our Queen J.K Rowling(because I’m biased!), but she’s one hell of a writer and I can’t wait for the next book. And by the way, this book has gotten movie rights, and is planned to have 7 books in the series even though I don’t get how that can happen. I would prefer it to be a trilogy. Do check it out for a fresh take on fantasy and sci-fi, this book’s concept is honestly one of the BEST.(I’m not kidding)
